Although such chests, or bureaus, were made in significant numbers in New Hampshire and the North Shore of Massachusetts, this chest possess sublime proportions, excellent aesthetical qualities, an old surface~finish, exceptional and very sophisticated construction details, and superior “patina”. The usage of lavish “crotch” mahogany veneers would suggest that this bureau was made in a sophisticated cabinetshop, possibly that of Samuel McIntire of Salem, Massachusetts, about 1800-1810.
This bureau is shown in an “estate-found” pre-conservation state.
