An American Federal giltwood pier mirror, circa 1810

An American Federal giltwood pier mirror or “looking glass” of large proportion, attributed to Boston or Salem. The frieze decorated with a gessoed composition of allegorical figures in the Classical taste with insets of cornucopias above rope turned columns. A similar mirror appears in the collection of Winterthur, Wilmington, DE.

Retains all original gilded surfaces.

Marks/inscriptions: A typed mid-20th century description appears on the reverse.

Provenance: The estate of the late Louise Cherry Brooks, a prominent Alabama fine arts dealer and collector.
